Serbia: The student movement wins the elections. Vucic admitted defeat in the early parliamentary elections in Serbia, the list "Students are winning! He received about 52% of the votes, according to preliminary estimates by observer organizations. The United Serbia coalition, linked to the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), gained about 40%. Aleksandar Vucic admitted the defeat of his political camp. According to his estimates, the student list can get 135-140 of the 250 seats in the People's Assembly, and its supporters - about 105 seats. This is a preliminary calculation, the official results have not yet been confirmed. The turnout was close to 70% according to observers, the turnout was one of the highest in Serbia's recent history. By 13:00, 41.1% of the voters had voted. For comparison, in the parliamentary elections in December 2023, the turnout was 26.6%. How the students came out on top The student movement became a prominent political force after the tragedy in Novi Sad in November 2024: when a canopy collapsed at a train station, killing 16 people. The demonstrations that followed were directed against corruption and demanded political accountability from the authorities. The movement presented its own electoral list and succeeded in uniting a considerable part of those dissatisfied with the current government. However, it is not a traditional party with a long-standing structure and an established ideological program. What changes now, if the preliminary alignment is approved, the student list will receive an independent parliamentary majority. This would open up the possibility of forming a government without a coalition with the SNS. But winning the elections does not mean an automatic solution to all problems. Future delegates will have to agree on a plan, determine the composition of the government and show whether the protest movement can become a sustainable political force.
