Israel: Knesset elections. Will Netanyahu manage to maintain power? On October 27, Israel will hold elections for the 26th Knesset. The vote will determine the composition of the 120-member parliament and who will have the opportunity to form the next government. For Benjamin Netanyahu, this is a test of support after the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 and the wars that followed. The campaign focuses on security issues, government responsibility for not preventing an attack, ultra-Orthodox military service and legal reform. What do the polls show? On average, according to polls published in October, parties in the current ruling coalition receive about 50 seats out of 120. That's less than the 61 seats needed for most. Among the prominent members of the opposition camp: "Straight! "led by former Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot; "Together", associated with Naftali Bennett and Yair Lapid; "Democrats" led by Yair Golan; "Our home is Israel" by Avigdor Lieberman. Surveys from different publications, so their indicators cannot be considered a ready distribution of future mandates. Why coalition negotiations can be decisive Israel uses a proportional election system. To enter the Knesset, a list must receive at least 3.25% of the kosher votes. The government is established with the support of the parliamentary majority, i.e. at least 61 deputies. Even if one party takes first place, it does not guarantee that it will form a cabinet. The results of the allies, the passage of small lists and the willingness of the parties to negotiate will be important. A separate issue is related to Arab parties. They may gain significant representation, but their participation in the government coalition remains a matter of political controversy. What options are possible First: Netanyahu and his allies win a majority and retain power. Second: the opposition parties agree on a joint government.
