The major cryptocurrency exchange Binance has published the first results of an investigation into a large-scale cyber attack, as a result of which attackers withdrew assets worth about 6.3 billion dollars. According to the company's preliminary data, the hack may have been caused by a compromised laptop of a DevOps engineer. This allowed an attacker to gain access to the service container and send unauthorized transactions to withdraw cryptocurrency. At the same time, Binance stated that it found no evidence of the leakage of private keys of cryptocurrency wallets. The company, along with partners in the blockchain industry, has already blocked approximately $3 billion of stolen assets directly on blockchain networks. Binance promised that it would fully compensate for the losses from SAFU's reserve fund and the company's own funds. "The user funds are safe," reads an official statement from the exchange. As an emergency measure, Binance has temporarily suspended deposits and withdrawals until security checks are completed. The company also revoked the compromised access permission and engaged law enforcement and blockchain analysts to track and recover the stolen assets. After the investigation is completed, Binance promises to publish a detailed technical report on the reasons for the hack, as well as an updated confirmation of reserves. Earlier, the American analytics firm TRM Labs stated that the North Korean hacker group TraderBug was allegedly behind the attack. Binance itself has not yet named the alleged organizers of the crime.
