The New York City Police Department is in negotiations to adopt a new AI-powered surveillance system called FalcoNet, a mobile cell site simulator developed by Israeli technology company Cognit that can be mounted on police vehicles, as drones or hidden in a backpack to track cell phones around the city, according to Shattered.io. FalcoNet mimics a real cellular antenna. As it moves through the neighborhood, nearby phones connect to the simulator, which captures each device's unique identification number and links it to its user. The technology incorporates unheralded artificial intelligence capabilities that analyze people's behaviors. The New York Police Department is about to sign a three-year, $750,500 contract with Cognit.
