Brazilian lawyer and businessman Wheeler Thomas has fled to Miami, Florida, with his family amid an intensifying federal police investigation into a money laundering scheme linked to sports betting, directly involving his close friend and business partner, Brazilian senator and right-wing presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro. Sources close to the lawyer reported that Tomáz suddenly traveled to Miami and privately stated that he planned to return to Brazil only if Flavio Bolsonaro won the Oct. 25 presidential election, according to Brazil's SBT news. Federal Supreme Court Judge Alexander de Moraes ordered the freezing of up to US$6 billion (about $1 billion) in assets belonging to Thomas. His passport was also suspended, his banking and tax privacy was removed, and his corporate activities were terminated.
