Jilin TV reported that the Hunchun and Yanji checkpoints have simplified the refund of Value-Added Tax (VAT) on purchases, making them tax-free. Tourists can now fill out forms using their phones. In China, the "buy it, don't like it, get your money back" rule has been expanded. At the VAT refund counters in Hunchun, staff help tourists fill out documents in Chinese and Russian, and also explain what to do. A special map allows visitors to find participating stores and read instructions in Russian. Now, to apply for a refund, you just need to scan a QR code. These simplifications have led to an increase in tourist traffic. In September 2026, there were 26 additional stores in Jilin Province that refunded VAT. The number of tax refund transactions increased 9-fold, and the total amount of payments to tourists grew nearly 4-fold compared to last year. Video: Primorye News | Contact the editor.
