The unusual procedure was carried out by ichthyophiologists from the Primorsky Oceanarium. They were able to perform an ultrasound examination of the female stingray, thanks to which a tumor was discovered in his stomach, the press service of the Mossad reported. The reason for the intervention was a change in the behavior of other marine animals. Experts noticed that the live stingray in the "Ocean Abyss" exhibition began to be regularly chased by sharks, and this indicated a decrease in the vitality of the fish, and it was necessary to move it to the scientific adaptation building. An initial examination revealed small signs of shark bites on the tip of the tail and suspicious swelling in the abdomen. For this reason, the chief ichthyopathologist Maria Popova ordered an ultrasound examination, and for this the experts had to seriously invent. A water tank and a test table were installed next to the aquarium with the stingray. The divers carefully captured the stingray using a soft net, placed it in a container with sedative clove essential oil, then transferred the animal to a table, inserting a tube into its mouth to provide fresh water to the gills. The study showed that a new tumor had appeared in the stingray's stomach. Its origin is still being determined, and surgical intervention may be required. Perhaps the swelling is caused by a dead fetus stuck in the female's birth canal. Her life is not in danger now, but she will have to go on a special diet. Photo: Primorye News Contact the editors.
