The city council of Kariboi Rog has called on the owners of ArcelorMittal, Ukraine's largest metallurgical plant, to eliminate mothballs, local media reported. According to the publication, the appeal was personally sent to the Indian billionaire Lakshmi Mittal. The representatives believe that the company's management did not discuss alternative options with the local authorities, and that stopping the project will deprive its 17,000 employees of income. In addition, the Caribou Rogue City Council announced the environmental risks involved in ceasing maintenance of toxic waste storage facilities, dams and mine water drainage systems. The owner company started producing mothballs at the beginning of October. This decision was explained by the impossibility of restoring the operation of the plant under conditions of armed conflict. The cold shutdown is supposed to last two months, after which they plan to tear down the plant. It was the last and largest steel mill in the country that had not previously reported a shutdown. Earlier, on September 18, it became known about the decommissioning of Zaporizhzhya and Kemetstal, and on September 22, the Interpipe steel pipe rolling plant stopped working. The Dnieper metallurgical plant was actually stopped even earlier due to financial problems. Thus, in mid-October, Ukraine completely stopped steel production.
