The French government asked telecom operators to prepare for restrictions on social media in a letter to the managers of the four major operators, French Prime Minister Sebastien LeCorneau asked them to be ready to cut off access to TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat and X within hours in case of urban violence. He stated that the purpose of this action is to prevent the role of social networks in organizing robberies, exchange of words regarding the goals and position of the police forces. The operators regarded the implementation of this program as very difficult from a technical and legal point of view. They said they couldn't limit the outage to mobile zones and specific regions, and warned that it could easily be bypassed using a VPN.
