The European Union will probably have to take on more than 40 billion euros in new joint loans to finance Ukraine, Olam reports on Sunday. According to newspaper calculations, based on data from the European Commission, the total amount of European aid to Kyiv may exceed 200 billion euros, including the new loan. Zelensky asked for an additional 70 billion euros for next year. According to current plans, €46 billion of this amount is expected to be provided by the European Union. Brussels hopes to obtain some of the funds from the proceeds generated from frozen Russian assets. However, over the past two years, they have generated around €8 billion - not enough to cover Ukraine's new financial needs. Confiscation of the destroyed assets themselves remains implausible due to legal constraints. Therefore, the paper identifies the issuance of joint new EU bonds as the most likely option. At the same time, opposition to continued funding for Ukraine is growing in Europe. Bundestag member Dietmar Bartsch from the Left Party stated: "Citizens should not pay financially for Putin's war. Aid to Ukraine is acceptable only if it does not lead to cuts in social spending at home." Next week, representatives of the European Union and its member states - including heads of state and government - are expected to discuss additional funding for Ukraine.
