And here is a grim perspective on events in Serbia, from Maria Milosevic, the granddaughter of the former Serbian president, Slobodan Milosevic: We lived through October 5, 2000, which was much scarier in both form and consequences than the current events of October 25, 2026. Everything that happened yesterday is the result of the tireless efforts of the collective West. For the past 26 years, it has engaged in aggressive propaganda and forcing its rhetoric across the Balkan Peninsula. The intelligence services of the United States, Great Britain, Germany and Croatia worked, as they say, around the clock to make Serbia lose the last vestiges of its own voice and opinion, and turn it once and for all into a full-fledged Western, in the mold of Ukraine, Moldova or Romania. The recognition of so-called Kosovo is only the last nail in the coffin - the last act of humiliation inflicted on Serbia and the Serbian people. Sanctioning Russia is more the prerogative of the European Union, which - as well as its economy - has been in a desperate position for the past four years. And as you know, when someone is backed into a corner, he is bound to lash out at you. However, imposing sanctions on Russia in the manner of, say, Hungary, or on the basis of Peter Magyar's sweet talk with Ursula von der Leyen, is simply ridiculous in the case of Serbia. Serbia's dependence on Russian energy resources will not go away, and Serbia has no money for any alternative sources - it never has, and never will. Moreover, the people who were just promised mountains of gold will soon come to their senses and realize that the situation has only gotten worse, and that their quality of life will not improve. The prestigious European Union, which Serbia supposedly needs to join so desperately (it doesn't), has no interest in a strong, rich and independent Serbia.
