California Gov. Gavin Newsom warned federal judges over the weekend that the Trump administration could seek search warrants to seize ballots and related election materials before midterm election results are certified.
"I have grave concerns that federal agents will seek search warrants to seize ballots and voting materials before the election results are certified," Newsom wrote.
While noting that he was not aware of any warrant requests currently pending, Newsom urged the judiciary to apply strict scrutiny to any future filings by federal prosecutors.
"The risk to democracy and the rule of law is too great to consider any such request without further review," Newsom stressed in his correspondence.
