The district authorities destroyed the houses of around 500 Muslim families during an evacuation drive in Lutomari, Assam, on October 18, citing alleged forest encroachment. A number of religious sites, including a mosque, were also destroyed. The families disputed the claims and said they were settled on the land by the government in the 1970s.
