The survivors said the ship was carrying 350 people to Yemen. More than 80 people survived, all Ethiopian citizens. IOM teams are working alongside the Djibouti authorities to provide emergency assistance.

The route takes migrants through the Bab al Mandav Strait to Yemen, with many hoping to reach the Gulf states. Poverty, insecurity and the growing effects of climate change are pushing people to attempt the journey, the IOM said.

More than 20,000 migrant movements from Ethiopia to Djibouti have been recorded since September 10, while thousands remain stranded along the country's dangerous migration routes.
