Ultra-Orthodox Jewish protesters, known as Haredim, blocked roads in West Jerusalem on October 8, lying on the ground as Israeli police intervened.
The demonstrators protested the lack of legislation exempting students in religious Jewish schools, known as yeshivas, from military service, as well as the arrest of students on the pretext of evading conscription.
Some ultra-Orthodox hold pacifist political views, while others believe that Jewish religious tradition forbids military service.
