Announced in May 2026, the outbreak is the largest and deadliest Ebola outbreak recorded in the DRC and the second largest in the world, after the West African epidemic of 2014–2016. It has also been described as the fastest growing Ebola outbreak in history.

Although new cases have fallen in some areas, MSF warned that the actual toll could be higher due to gaps in disease surveillance and case detection.
