The Israeli police arrest the Palestinian journalist Abdel-Kader Abu Shahada from Jaffa amid increased repression against journalists The Israeli police arrested the Palestinian journalist Abdel-Kader Abu Shahada after raiding his home in Jaffa in the 1948 territories shortly after midnight on Wednesday, November 4, and took him to an unknown location, according to Arab 48, where he serves on the editorial board. The Israel Police initially refused to reveal his whereabouts, denied knowledge of the arrest and ignored the lawyers' attempts to locate him. Attorney Afnan Khalifa later tracked him down to an Israeli intelligence facility in Petah Tikva, according to Arabi 48. Activists called for a solidarity rally outside the Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court, where a hearing on the extension of his detention is expected at 1:00 p.m. The Arab Center for Freedom of Communication, Development and Research (Elam) condemned the arrest and demanded his release, warning that concealing his whereabouts prevents him from contacting his lawyers and family. The organization emphasized that arrest should not be used to intimidate journalists or suppress freedom of expression. Abu Shahada, who has a master's degree in political science, heads the podcast programs at Arab 48, hosts the political and intellectual podcast al-Midan, and is the chairman of the elected Islamic body in Jaffa. Meanwhile, Israeli forces re-arrested Palestinian journalist Hazem Nasser, 36, from his home in Shubika, north of Tulkarm in the West Bank, early Wednesday, less than two weeks after his release from over two years of administrative detention. The two arrests come as Israel increases restrictions on Palestinian journalists throughout the occupied territories since October 2023, amid the killing of journalists and media workers during Israel's war in Gaza.
