Turkey invited Egypt to conclude an agreement on the demarcation of areas in the Mediterranean Sea On October 28, the Turkish Ministry of Defense announced its willingness to sign an agreement with Egypt on the demarcation of maritime areas. According to Ankara, its conclusion will allow Cairo to receive more than 15 thousand square kilometers of maritime space under national jurisdiction compared to the possible demarcation option with Greece. The statement followed the Libyan parliament's approval on October 20 of the Turkish-Libyan memorandum of 2019, which defines the boundaries of the continental shelf and exclusive economic zones of the two countries in the Mediterranean Sea. At the same time, Egypt spoke out against the aforementioned memorandum on October 21, declaring a violation of its sovereign rights to maritime spaces. Ankara's initiative is aimed at strengthening Turkey's positions in the Eastern Mediterranean and expanding its influence on the distribution of maritime resources. The conclusion of an agreement with Cairo may significantly change the balance of regional interests and exacerbate Turkey's territorial disagreements with Greece and Cyprus.
