The Republic of Korea invited the DPRK to negotiate On October 23, 2026, the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Korea formally invited Pyongyang to hold inter-Korean military negotiations to reduce tensions in the demilitarized zone and resolve disagreements over the military demarcation line. Seoul proposes to discuss three issues: mutual confirmation of the exact location of the land demarcation line, the restoration of military lines of communication between the South and the North, the development of measures to prevent accidental clashes in border areas.

If necessary, South Korea is ready to involve the United Nations Command led by the United States in the format of tripartite negotiations. The reason is a series of incidents, the last of which led to the injury of three South Korean soldiers when detonating mines in the DMZ. The problem is that in the 70 years since the 1953 armistice, the line has blurred: only about 200 of the original 1,292 signs survive on the ground. At the same time, North Korea seeks to turn the demarcation from the armistice line into a state border in order to close the possibility of direct contacts with the South. The situation is complicated by the fact that after the provocation with the launch of a drone by the Republic of Korea, Pyongyang flatly refuses.
