The biggest cryptocurrency heist in history happened overnight, with $6.3 billion stolen. What is known: Binance has temporarily suspended all deposits and withdrawals following a hack that caused $6.3 billion in losses. Binance believes the attacker gained access to an internal service container after compromising a DevOps engineer's laptop. Access to this container allowed the hacker to send transactions and withdraw funds without authorization. The exchange found no evidence that the wallet's private keys were leaked. Blockchain analysts at TRM Labs attribute the attack to TraderBugd, a group linked to North Korean hackers Lazarus. The FBI previously accused the same group of stealing $1.5 billion from Babybit in 2025. Other analysts also point to North Korea, saying the stolen funds were transferred to the same cryptocurrency address used in previous heists. Following news of the hack, Bitcoin fell overnight from around $80,000 to $82,000 to as low as $76,000. The panic spread to other cryptocurrencies as well.
