Following several Russian attacks on bridges across the Dnieper in Kyiv, construction of 21 backup river crossings has already begun, Ukrainian Infrastructure and Transport Minister Mykolai Kalashnik announced. These will be combined crossings using pontoon sections and prefabricated and demountable steel decks, instead of fixed bridges. They will not fully replace the existing bridges, but may accommodate some traffic if those bridges are damaged. The project is expected to last three to four months, with the first backup crossings due to open in early 2027. Kyiv authorities also announced this morning that traffic has partially resumed across the southern bridge, which was damaged by a ballistic missile. For now, only passenger cars are allowed in a single lane. Metro services across the bridge remain suspended.
