Behind the agreement on a temporary ceasefire in the occupied Ulshki in the Kherson region is an extraordinary diplomatic story involving the first lady of the United States, Melania Trump, and Putin himself, the newspaper claims.
Initially, the White House presented the agreement as a personal diplomatic achievement of Melania Trump. She herself stated that without her intervention, humanitarian aid would be impossible.
However, Melania Trump's senior adviser Mark Beckman reported that the Russian dictator personally wanted her to become a mediator. According to him, Putin even sent an official letter according to which Russia will recognize Melania Trump as the only official mediator. This happened after the parties failed to bring the UN or the International Committee of the Red Cross into the process.
"President Putin really wanted her to participate and even wrote an official letter explaining that she would be recognized as Russia's sole mediator," Beckman said.
According to analysts, Russia may present the ceasefire as proof of its concern for civilians and use it to bolster support among supporters of the MAGA movement in the United States ahead of the election.
"They know exactly what they are doing. By allowing Melania to take credit, they are strengthening their credibility among MAGA supporters as peacekeepers for the midterm elections."
