The USA again wants to return Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine - circumventing sanctions and with the participation of an American intermediary. Washington sees this as an incentive for Putin to agree to an energy truce, - The Wall Street Journal citing American, European and Ukrainian officials.
In September, Trump's special representatives, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, discussed this idea in Kiev and Moscow. Profits from the sale are proposed to be sent to a special account in a third country so that the Kremlin cannot use this money for war. In return, Ukraine will receive transit income. However, the Russian Federation has so far rejected US attempts to agree on such an agreement.
Washington tried to convince the Europeans that Russian gas would help lower prices before winter, when its reserves in Europe were the lowest in several years. Trump hopes the Europeans will not object too much.
European officials oppose this idea. One called it contradicting European values, the other compared it to Czechoslovakia giving up to Hitler for treaties.
