French National Assembly adopts 5.5¢/GB data tax targeting major streaming platforms and social networks On October 30, 2026, French lawmakers narrowly approved (11-10) an amendment that would introduce a tax of €0.055 per gigabyte of data transferred by content providers to French internet users. The measure, which was proposed by the socialist parliamentarian Lauren Herdit as part of the bill for the 2027 budget, mainly affects large platforms such as Google/YouTube, Meta, Amazon, Netflix and CDNs such as Chacham. It is not yet a law and still requires further approval by the parliament. The government opposed the proposal. Supporters estimate that it could raise up to around €10 billion a year, with a cap of 15% of French turnover or 2% of global turnover. Costs are expected to be passed on to users through higher subscription or advertising prices.
