Lost genius Why are women's inventions less cited? Azadeh Khorramimogadam/ author of the publication A study on the low reference of inventions with a female inventor examines the same question. The findings of Yael V. Hochberg, Ali Kahved, Pio Lee and Kunal Sahdeva, using machine learning methods and text analysis, reveal a gap that can be seen in the number of references received by women's inventions; The gap that did not disappear even after examining the content of the invention and some characteristics related to its quality. The subject of the article is not only the obstacles women face before entering the field of innovation; The question is, once an invention is created and patented, does that achievement receive as much attention as similar inventions with the original male inventor? The main finding of the article shows that the inventions whose main inventor is a woman, compared to the estimate obtained for the same inventions if the main inventor is a man, receive fewer references. In the initial assessment, the average gap is about 2.12 references. By adding additional controls in the regression models, this distance reaches about 2.5 references. The authors report this value to be about 13% lower than the average number of citations for inventions with a female primary inventor. The total gap in the number of references cannot be attributed to the performance of patent experts alone. A large part of it is found in references that inventors themselves make in new documents (especially male inventors). However, the researchers do not see this result as absolute proof of intentional discrimination. The data show that male inventors cite fewer inventions with a female lead inventor than expected, but the reason for this behavior cannot be determined from the number of citations alone. The discussion of gender inequality usually begins with the opportunities that women may or may not have to enter the scientific and professional fields. This study shows that the citation gap cannot be explained solely by observable differences between inventions. Therefore, the subject deserves a serious examination, that is, to understand which factors affect its visibility.
