Apple and Microsoft were required to store user correspondence and transfer data to the Russian intelligence services Roskomandzor included Apple and Microsoft in the registry of the organizers of the distribution of information. Companies must now comply with Russian requirements for storing user data. If they refuse, they face fines and in the future a possible blocking of services through the courts. By law, companies from the registry are obliged to store information about user actions for three years, and the content of messages for up to six months. This applies to text messages, audio and video. At the request of authorized parties, data must be provided in the cases stipulated by law. However, inclusion in the register does not mean that the intelligence services automatically gained access to all correspondence. At the same time, Roscommander strengthens the control over IP addresses. Until May 21, the department fined 85 telecom operators for not providing the required information. In March, 1,359 operators received requests for such information. The fine for the first violation can reach 500 thousand rubles, for the second violation - one million. Operators must report changes in IP addresses and link them to connection data. According to Izvestia, when requesting a specific address, information must be transmitted within an hour. This data helps investigate cyber attacks, but can also be used to detect VPN connections. Compliance with the new requirements requires additional equipment and personnel. Operators warn that rising costs could eventually lead to higher prices for telecom services.
