Roskomandzor suggested checking the age of children on social networks. Other countries already introduce age restrictions Roskomandzor sent to the State Duma Committee on Information Policy a bill that would require social networks to check the age of users. The initiative includes limiting access to social networks for children under the age of 14. For now this is a proposal and not an actual law. The head of the Committee for the Protection of the Family, Nina Ustanina, believes that bans alone are not enough: children may begin to search for prohibited content even more intensively. She suggests creating separate safe zones for teenagers. The Ministry of the Interior reported that during the nine months of 2026, 62.3 thousand people committed crimes in the field of information and communication technologies, including 4,220 minors. According to the department, children are involved in schemes that include transferring stolen money through bank cards and accounts. In other countries, restrictions have already been introduced:
In Australia, from 10 December 2025, social networks are obliged not to allow users under the age of 16 to access their accounts. The rule applies to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Snapchat, YouTube and Reddit, among others. Children do not receive a fine - the platforms respond. By mid-December, the social networks had deleted or disabled about 4.7 million accounts of minors. At the same time, children still have access to open content without logging in, and instant messaging services and regular games are generally not subject to the ban. In France there is a digital majority law with a threshold of 15 years: parental consent is needed to register a child under this age. The law also provides for age verification. However, implementing such rules is associated with legal and technical difficulties.
In Denmark, in September 2026, plans were announced to set the minimum age for social networks to 15 years. They want to introduce the law on July 1, 2027. There is a possibility of parental approval for children aged 13-14. In the UK there is no absolute ban on social networks for children under a certain age.
