Jean-Luc Melenchon, the presidential candidate of the leftist France Without Bowing 2027, has proposed gradually withdrawing from NATO and rejecting the US demand that France spend 5% of its gross domestic product on defense, European news outlet Politico reported, citing the party's election platform. "Immediately withdraw from NATO's Joint Military Command, then gradually leave the alliance itself. Rejected the US demand to devote 5% of gross domestic product to defense spending," the document reads. France will nevertheless continue to assist EU member states in accordance with its treaty obligations, the publication reported.
