Guinea, one of Africa's main gold exporters, inaugurated its first gold refinery, radio station RFI reported. Guinea is following in the footsteps of other gold-producing countries such as Mali, Burkina Faso and Ghana, which have already launched refining facilities, the media point out. A similar plant is scheduled to open in Ivory Coast in 2027. Guinean authorities have long expressed displeasure that the country's gold is being exported unprocessed and sent to refineries abroad. Guinea exports about 70 tons of the metal a year, of which 50 tons originate from artisanal mining.
