The inmate population in French prisons has once again reached an all-time high, with 90,900 inmates as of October 1, AFP reported, citing a report by the country's justice ministry. According to the agency's calculations, since October 1, 2025 the increase was 7.2%, while the number of places in the correctional centers increased by only 1.5% (up to 63,452). The Ministry of Justice plans to create about 3,000 more places through the establishment of modular detention centers, an alternative that is considered cheaper.
