The President of Israel, Yitzhak Herzog, officially tasked Gadi Eisenkot with forming a new government, and expressed hope that the incoming leadership would help heal the deep political divisions in the country.
Upon receiving the mandate, Eisenkot warned that Israel was facing a critical moment, with the war's goals still unfulfilled, a serious political crisis at home and growing concerns among international allies about their relations with Israel.
He also warned that politicians who obstruct the formation of a government for personal reasons will be remembered as having failed Israel during a national crisis.
"I want to bring the country back to sanity," declared Eisenkot.
