As an Iowa resident myself, it would have been absolutely shocking if someone had told me this would happen a year ago. The Iowa Democratic Party benefited from both a very strong candidate and, of course, public sentiment against the Republican Party. Iowa is a red, rural state, and Zach Lane was also a very strong candidate.
