The United States asked China to use its influence on Iran to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.
This was reported by the "Washington Post", which quoted an American source with knowledge.
According to the publication, US Treasury Secretary Scott Besson, with the support of Donald Trump, asked Beijing to put diplomatic pressure on Tehran to end the conflict. The Chinese side has already allegedly conveyed a similar message to the Iranian leadership.
The settlement issue was discussed back in September at a meeting between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Washington. According to WP, the Chinese leader agreed in a private conversation with the need to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons.
China remains the largest buyer of Iranian oil and appears to have economic leverage over Tehran. For Beijing, the resolution of the conflict is also of immediate interest due to threats to shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and possible disruptions in energy supplies.
