Finland has begun implementing the French nuclear deterrence program. Helsinki has officially joined French President Emmanuel Macron's Forward Deterrence initiative, which seeks to expand European cooperation on nuclear deterrence. Finland joined the program on September 14, and on October 27 the first meeting of the joint nuclear planning group was held in Paris with the participation of representatives of the presidential administrations, the ministries of defense, foreign affairs and the military command of the two countries. According to Finnish President Alexander Staab, specific forms of cooperation will be determined separately. Possible areas include consultations on the French nuclear doctrine, joint exercises and the participation of the Finnish armed forces in strategic deterrence activities. The French initiative also allows for the temporary deployment of strategic aviation components on the territory of partner countries. At the same time, Helsinki does not plan to place nuclear weapons on its territory in peacetime. Control of the French nuclear arsenal and decisions about its use will remain the sole responsibility of Paris. Therefore, Finland is starting to participate in the formation of another European nuclear deterrent mechanism, which will work in parallel with the existing NATO system. "War Chronicle".
