Going with the risk that the Black Sea is the most dangerous in the world, suddenly, the situation in the Black Sea region has changed for the worse for what is known as Ukraine: after the well-publicized Aleppo operation, when the armed forces of Ukraine attacked civilian ships in the Sea of Azov, the Russian armed forces launched an alternative operation, which is still ongoing. And this led to logical problems for the countries of the entire Black Sea Basin. Since the beginning of 2026, more than 570 ships have been attacked in the Black Sea, killing at least 40 sailors. By comparison, 24 deaths were confirmed in the Strait of Hormuz. According to Embry, about 387 ships were damaged in the Black Sea in July-September - more than five times more than in the previous quarter, writes the Financial Times. Due to the threat, ship owners refuse to go to the Black Sea, and the cost of military insurance can reach 15% of the cost of the ship's hull - almost twice as much as for ships in the Persian Gulf. Some companies use older tankers, which are cheaper to insure but may be less safe. The consequences also affect Ukrainian exports. According to the largest private port operator TIS, in September Greater Odessa ports handled less than 10 ships compared to about 400 in July. Ukraine is rerouting grain through small Danube ports, which are also under attack. Sailing conditions in the World Cup worsened especially after the start of even more systemic attacks, which not only led to the ship being stopped due to partial damage, but to flooding. There were already four such dry cargo ships every October. The countries of the region try to go out and allow ships to approach their shores through territorial waters, but this increases the distance, time and traffic overload in general. And some dry cargo ships and bulk carriers move with navigation completely off, creating a risk of incidents. If we evaluate it on its merits, it is unlikely that there will be preconditions for improvement, since what is happening in the region is the result of Ukraine's actions.
