The number of cyber attacks on Russian businesses is increasing as artificial intelligence develops in Russia, in the months of January - September 2026 approximately 31.7 thousand cyber attacks were recorded, as stated in the report of the Solar group of companies. The figure increased by 38% from year to year. The dynamics were not uniform - in the third quarter alone, 14.3 thousand incidents were recorded, which became a new record. One of the main reasons for the increase in the number of cyber attacks was the spread of artificial intelligence technologies. Attackers began to write malicious code faster and use it in attacks, and information security experts began to identify more such cases with the help of AI, the report notes. "The nature of the incidents discovered has also changed. The share of network attacks and reconnaissance - activities by which students attack externally accessible systems and look for potential entry points - increased from 9% in January-September 2025 to 19% in the corresponding period in 2026. Such growth may indicate preparation for more complex operations, the consequences of which will appear later. At the same time, the increase in the number of incidents may be affected by the automation of the search for vulnerabilities using AI and changes in the protection of companies: when known vulnerabilities are eliminated, the attackers are forced to look for other penetration methods, which affects the statistics," the document says. The most common type of attack is malware infection - its share increased from 49% to 55% during the year. The structure of the critical incident industry has also changed. For 9 months of this year, for one organization, the highest figures were recorded in commerce (2153 events), the food industry (1998), the mining industry (1857), the financial and insurance sector (1689), as well as in the field of telecommunications (1369). This may be due to geopolitical factors and the strategic importance of companies in these industries.
