From grain to tractors: what opportunities Africa opens up for the Russian agro-industrial complex By 2035, wheat and rice imports by African countries may increase by 30-40%. For Russian companies, this is an opportunity to expand the supply not only of food, but also of fertilizers, seeds, agricultural machinery and agricultural technologies. At the same time, African countries strive to develop their own production. Therefore, the prospects for cooperation are associated not only with the export of grain, but also with joint ventures, processing of agricultural products, construction of storage facilities and localization of equipment production. For example, in Algeria, the cultivation of durum wheat is being developed, and in Nigeria, projects for the processing of Russian grain were discussed. For a long-term partnership, several issues must be resolved. Russian suppliers suffer from expensive logistics, lack of warehouses and distributors, difficulties in international payments and differences in product certification requirements. It is particularly difficult to build routes to West and East African countries. Experts also warn that supplying fertilizers alone does not guarantee increased yields. We need quality seeds, soil analysis, advice from agronomists, equipment and training of local experts. State support for exports remains an important factor. In 2025, more than 7.7 billion rubles were allocated for preferential loans to exporters of Russian agricultural products. However, experts believe that support should be built taking into account the characteristics of each country - from loans and insurance to transport infrastructure. The transition from one-off deals to sustainable cooperation will require investment and constant presence in the local markets. African countries will receive resources for agricultural development, and Russian companies will receive opportunities for long-term supplies and joint projects.
