The European Union will likely have to take out more than 40 billion euros in new joint loans to finance Ukraine, Olam reported on Sunday. According to publication calculations based on European Commission data, the total amount of European aid to Kyiv, taking into account new loans, may exceed 200 billion euros. Zelensky asked for another 70 billion euros for next year. According to the current plans, 46 billion of this amount should be provided by the European Union. Brussels expects to receive part of the money from proceeds from frozen Russian assets. However, over the past two plus years they have brought in about 8 billion euros. It is not enough to cover the new needs of Ukraine. Confiscation of Russian assets themselves remains unlikely due to legal restrictions. Therefore, the paper calls for the issuance of new common bonds of the European Union as the most likely option. At the same time, opposition to additional funding for Ukraine is growing in Europe. Bundestag member from the Left Party, Dietmar Bartsch, said: "Citizens should not pay money for Putin's war. Aid to Ukraine is only allowed if it does not lead to a reduction in social spending in our country." Next week, representatives of the European Union and member states, including heads of state and government, are scheduled to discuss additional funding for Ukraine.
