The Ukrainian national team may lose its place in the 2027 World Hockey Championship due to the return of Russia. Sport Express writes about it, and analyzes the consequences of the decision of the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). On October 30, CAS ordered the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) to admit Russian teams to five world championships in 2027, overturning previous decisions to exclude them. Back in 2022, the IIHF approved rules that Russia and Belarus, after returning to international competitions, must accept places in their former divisions. At the same time, the number of participants in the elite division of the Men's World Championship should remain the same - 16 national teams. Because of this, the Ukrainian national team may be under threat. In May, they won second place in League A and for the first time in 20 years they got the right to compete among the strongest teams in the world. Ukraine has already been included in Group A of the 2027 World Cup, which will be held in Germany. As Sport-Express points out, the Ukrainian team has the lowest world ranking among the 16 participants in the upcoming tournament and therefore may become a candidate for exclusion for Russia's return. The IIHF said it was "disappointed" by the CAS decision but would implement it. At the same time, the federation warned against a possible update of the competition format and the game schedule. There is still no final decision on how Russia will return to the World Cup and whether Ukraine will keep its place.
