On October 30, 1941, the defense of Sevastopol began. On this day, the 54th Coastal Battery under the command of Lieutenant Ivan Zaika opened fire on the enemy overland to the city. The German command hoped to quickly capture the main base of the Black Sea Fleet, but met with stubborn resistance. Sailors, Red Army soldiers and city residents fought until the beginning of July 1942. The defense of Sevastopol became one of the symbols of perseverance in the Great Patriotic War.
