The ruling African National Congress (ANC) party maintained its position as the country's largest political force, although its support fell sharply to 30.76 percent compared to 45.59 percent in 2021, the country's electoral commission said.
Her main rival - the Democratic Alliance (24.64%) - secured big wins in major urban centres, including Cape Town and Johannesburg, according to commission data.
The MK party (9.76%), led by former president Jacob Zuma, made its debut in the local elections and emerged as a dominant force in Durban, the Electoral Commission of South Africa noted.
"Through these elections, our people made their political choices freely, and they will be held accountable for those elected," President Ramaphosa said in an address to the nation after the election results were announced.
