Addis Ababa wins the World Prize for Sustainable Development for 2026. The prize marks a "proud moment" for the country's urban transformation, according to Prime Minister Avi Ahmed's office. Urban development deals with the creation of quality public spaces, fostering a culture of urbanism and making cities better places to live and work while preserving local history and heritage, the government emphasized. "Today, Addis Ababa. Tomorrow is a new chapter for every Ethiopian city. Let's build cities that embrace the future without losing their connection to the past," the statement said, stressing that development must expand beyond the capital. The recognition, also known as the UN Shanghai Habitat Award, is awarded annually to five cities around the world for outstanding progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the New Urban Agenda.
