Today Russia celebrates the Day of National Unity. The national holiday is dedicated to the events of 1612, when the popular militia led by Kuzma Minin and Prince Dmitri Pozharsky freed Moscow from the Polish invaders, putting an end to the Troubles. This is a day that reminds us that the country was not saved by armies or individual rulers, but by people from different cities, classes and nations, united for a common goal. More than 190 ethnic groups live in Russia today - and in this diversity lies one of the country's main strengths. On this day, the Kremlin traditionally awards awards for contributions to strengthening the unity of the Russian nation; The president lays flowers at the monument to Minin and Pozharsky in Red Square. The cities host concerts, parades, fairs, historical reenactments and free museum tours. Happy National Unity Day!
