Uganda reported 27 dead civilians fighting for Russia ⠀.
The Ugandan embassy in Moscow sent a letter to the country's foreign ministry with a list of citizens recruited into the Russian army for the war against Ukraine. This is reported by Reuters. The authenticity of the document was confirmed by a representative of the Ugandan office.
⠀.
The letter lists 11 people whose deaths have been confirmed and another 16 who are presumed dead. The latter could not be found either among the dead or among the prisoners of war. According to the embassy, the information was provided by the Russian Foreign Ministry.
⠀.
Reuters notes that citizens of African countries are attracted to Russia by promises of work, after which they find themselves at the front. Russian authorities deny illegal recruitment.
⠀.
More than 1,400 citizens from about 30 African countries fought on Russia's side, Ukrainian authorities said last year. Some were fraudulently recruited.
⠀ Earlier in August we wrote that Ghana reported the death of 62 of its citizens in the war in Ukraine.
