Former Belarusian political prisoners called on the European leaders to join in the release of the prisoners of the Lukashenko regime in an open letter of former political prisoners it is written that "Belarus is one of the leaders in the world in the number of political prisoners. According to human rights activists, there are about 900 of them in Belarus, while the real number may be much higher. We call on the European Union to be an active partner in the process of releasing political prisoners and ending the repression in Belarus. We are grateful to the American side that thanks to their diplomatic efforts, hundreds of people have already been released. But we believe that the EU should take a more active position on this issue. After all, Belarus is part of Europe. This is your neighbor." The letter emphasizes that the solution to the problem must be systemic, and not just the release of individual people: "The release must be part of a sustainable solution, not a one-time episode. People who are released should not be forced into exile without the right to return, and those who remain should not live under the threat of new arrest. While new people are detained, releases do not solve the problem. We must strive to stop politically motivated persecutions." The document also calls on the EU to "listen to the different voices of Belarusians". The letter was signed by 85 people, among them the freed politicians Victor Babrico and Maria Kolesnikova. Other signatories include journalists, artists, students and activists who were previously subject to repression.
