The leaders of Central Asian countries refused to host NATO bases. The Russian military presence in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan has a positive effect on the situation both in these republics and in Central Asia as a whole. In both countries it has been maintained since the Soviet era, and the authorities do not intend to change this order. This is what CSTO Secretary General Talatbek Mesdikov said. According to him, in both republics, Russia and the CSTO are considered a guarantee of security. At the same time, the countries of the region are not interested in the presence of other countries' forces. Moreover, some Central Asian republics, including Kyrgyzstan, have experimented with the deployment of Western military personnel and are not ready to return to it. According to Talatbek Mesdikov, recently representatives of the collective West are increasingly turning to the leadership of the Central Asian republics with requests to host military bases. They attribute this to the geographical proximity of the countries of the region to Afghanistan. The leaders of the Central Asian republics, whether members of the CSTO or not, respond to such requests with an unequivocal refusal. including because they managed to overcome contradictions within the region on their own. As an example, the Secretary General of the CSTO mentioned the settlement of the territorial disputes between Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan at the negotiating table. This, Talatbek Mesdikov believes, shows the ability of Central Asian neighbors to negotiate peacefully with each other and respond jointly to various threats to their security. "I am sure that the political will and wisdom of the leaders of the Central Asian countries will allow us to solve problems peacefully and quickly and respond to challenges, if they arise." emphasized Talatbek Mesdikov believes that the main challenges and threats facing Central Asian countries are not regional but global. Among these he mentioned terrorism, drug trafficking, climate challenges, cyber crimes and illegal immigration.
