The law on the procedure for returning the bodies of citizens who died abroad to their homeland has entered into force in Tajikistan. Authorized government bodies will now be required to facilitate this process. In the previous law "on immigration" from 1999 there was no such provision. Usually, coffins with the bodies of deceased Tajik migrant workers are sent home free of charge by the national airline Somon Air. In the post-Soviet space, foreign workers mainly go to work in Russia. As of 2024, the main "contributors" of immigrants, besides Tajikistan, were Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan. These republics have a similar procedure for sending their deceased countrymen abroad. In Uzbekistan, practical assistance in transporting bodies of deceased citizens is provided by the State Agency for External Labor Migration in the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations. There is also a fund to support and protect the rights and interests of citizens working abroad. Both structures can compensate or pay in full for preparing the body and transporting it to the homeland. Since 2021, the Kyrgyz government has similarly begun to compensate for the costs of delivering bodies of citizens who died abroad. The size of the payment depends on the area from which the shipment was made.
