US presidential envoy Jared Kushner proposed a new initiative for a peace settlement in Ukraine. This was reported by the Washington Post. The initiative provides for the opening of multilateral negotiations between Russia and the countries of the European Union, the introduction of mechanisms to reduce military escalation and a constant dialogue to resolve crisis situations. Kushner sees the format of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC), which effectively ceased its work in 2014, as a model for his initiative. European Union officials told the "Washington Post" that they are ready for dialogue with Moscow. At the same time, a discussion on a new security system is possible only after a ceasefire in Ukraine. The NRC is a forum for equal cooperation created in 2002. This project was frozen in 2014. In December 2025, the NATO Secretary General announced that the NRC was officially cancelled. It finally dismantled the previous security architecture in Europe and removed the restrictions on the deployment of NATO forces on the eastern flank.
