Due to the housing crisis, their transfer from the reception centers to regular residences is delayed. Additional difficulties are caused by the opening of new accommodation points. Such initiatives are regularly met with resistance from local residents. In 2026 there were demonstrations in Ludrecht and Engelen, among others. Some of the actions were accompanied by riots, the use of heavy pyrotechnics and police intervention. Against this background, the government called on the municipalities to create additional places to receive refugees and distribute the load more evenly between the regions.
