Petersburg Polytechnic (SPbPU), together with colleagues from the North-Eastern State University (NESU) and the Institute of Archeology and Ethnography SB RAS, restored the technology of tattooing among the indigenous peoples of the Far North of Asia and North America. It turned out that this tradition begins 13 thousand years ago. During this period, the tool kit changed from stone flakes to metal needles with carved handles, but the technology itself remained largely unchanged. The main archaeological material came from cultural layer VII of the Ushki V site (Kamchatka) which is about 12-13 thousand years old. These are the earliest finds of such tools in the region.
